Community Grants Commendation (3) There are three clubs that received commendations in this category:
1. Bundaberg PCYC isa small regional club. After 2 unsuccessful attempts the club was triumphant in 2011 in receiving a Jupiters Community Benefit Fund grant to the value of $35,450 to purchase a FIG Floor. This has enabled the club to meet the training needs of its current athletes, and build capacity for the future. The club plans to host its first Interclub in 2012 , with an eye to hosting regional competitions in subsequent years.
2. Gladstone Gymnastics Club is a not for profit club and has a dedicated committee position for the role of ‘Grants Officer’ as they believe this is integral in enabling the club to maintain and upgrade equipment. The club has had recent success from 3 sources: Firstly received $30,000 plus from the Gambling Benefit Fund enabling upgrades in equipment focusing on safety with matting for a dedicated bars and beam area The club also received $1200 from Gladstone Regional Council for coaches training and education and finally received a Sportscover grant to purchase additional matting for use in both the recreation and competitive programs.
3. Gold Coast Gymnastics Club in 2011 accessedgrants funding for:
Education of coaches, judges, administrators through the (Qld Govt. Sport & Recreation Dept.)
Equipment & facility upgrades through (Jupiters and Gambling Community Benefit Funds.)
Employment Projects through (First Start Grant- Qld. Education & Training )
Traineeships through (Commonwealth Employment Incentives).
2011 also saw the final acquittal of their Healthy Active Australian Communities and Schools Program. This $200,000 project involved offering a free try out gymnastics lesson to 20,000 school children in the Gold Coast area, along with the delivery of a healthy eating message and brochure. This enabled the club to establish satellite venues in areas of need one in Coomera and the other in the Tweed at a reduced risk to the club.
Club Facility Development Commendation (6) There are six clubs that have received commendations in this category, the judges felt strongly that all six clubs be acknowledged in this category:
1. Bundaberg PCYC relocated to a new facility in 2010, their successful grant application and fundraising in 2011 enabling the club to outfit with new equipment including, FIG Floor, a set of uneven bars, ,springboards and matting for the Artistic Program. More recently the club purchased a Trampoline and two Double Mini Tramps facilitating the commencement in 2012 of Trampoline Sports to the clubs expanding program. The club has also undertaken the process to gain a Club 10 Star 3 rating to further enhance the facility.
2. Gold Coast Gymnastics Club enhanced their main facility in a number of ways in 2011. Firstly they undertook WHS safety overhaul of the training area resulting in additional padding, improved matting and redesigning of some areas. Secondly the club tackled the project of Building Cooling by installing wall insulation and wall vents .The club also purchased new curtaining for the venue, all these new additions had a noticeable effect on the building’s internal temperature. The club also embraced technology in their venue by: a) installing a video feedback system for coach and gymnasts viewing b) installing a touch screen panel in the foyer for customers use containing detailed information on all club and administration matters. Customers are also able to ask questions without requiring reception service. c) installing a large plasma scoreboard and setting up networked computers running Scoremaster to further enhance the Delivery of Competitions.
3. Y-West Gymnastic Club Throughout 2011 Y-West achieved the following upgrades to the club facility: a) new street signage to reflect branding & services b)new safety walkway from carpark c)reception make-over d) upgrade to gymnastics hall - internal painting, lighting upgrade, new signage e) equipment upgrade including landing matting, spotting boxes, foam vault, safety covers on beam legs, replacement climbing rope, spring board, metal rail and a few other miscellaneous items. All of this contributes to Y-West remaining one of the best equipped gymnastics facilities in the region.
4. TumbleTastics – is a recreational based program teaching the fundamentals of movement from birth to 8 years of age.
The venue was worn and in need of a complete refurbishment. In January 2011 Tumbletastics renovated their Hawthorne facility to provide participants and parents with the WOW factor. As the photos show too enticing not to return.
5. Showtime Aerobic Gymnastics – in August 2011 Showtime moved from a Community Hall into a purpose developed facility for the sole use of the Aerobic Club. The facility includes 2 wooden floor areas with competition markings, full matted area for skill development, strength and conditioning area with a variety of equipment, and three Ballet barres. This new facility has enabled the club to offer more comprehensive Aerobic programs and thus better meet the needs of all athletes from recreational to International stream. It has also allowed the club to diversify into sport specific conditioning, physical literacy and adult boot camps.
6. Brisbane Boys College – In 2011 BBC has undertaken $38,000 upgrading the vaulting facilities to bring them into FIG regulations. BBC has one of the few Qld. Facilities that meet FIG equipment requirements for all MAG apparatus. BBC continues to ensure that it’s facilities meet all safety requirements for MAG training , and the hosting of Junior and Senior Competitions. Gymnastics Queensland is very appreciative of this undertaking.
Community Engagement Commendation (2) There are two clubs that have received commendations in this category:
1.Allstar Gymnastics Academy- Have been actively engaged delivering a large variety of programs to the local Toowoomba community. In addition to their MAG and WAG competitive base, the club offers classes in general gymnastics, kindergym, adult classes, cheerleading. The club now delivers a schools participation program to seven schools as well as regular classes to several child care centres. The club also trialled a come and try day for the Toowoomba Autism support group, this was highly successful and the club anticipates providing more multi ability programs in the future. The club also attracted a great deal of local media attention in the hosting of the MAG & WAG Regional Championships and State Team Trials.
2. Delta Gymnastics Gold Coast – In order to successfully deliver its WAG programsthis club has developed a unique partnership between a “not for profit” club, private school, local council and business. Delta Gold Coast manages the gymnastic services delivered at both the club and school venues. Throughout 2011 the staff at Delta conducted 3 open days enabling the local community to look at what they had to offer. The Southport club committee sponsor and support the girls activities (boot camps, carnivals, travel …..) The Delta club manager works hard to create a family feel. In 2011 the club employed an administrator, with added activities like newsletters, website updates, a facebook page , and media releases broadening local community and member communication. It’s school partner St Hilda’s is well looked after now wholly running the schools competitive teams, in addition to providing 45 minute classes for all prep and pre prep students over 38 weeks of the year. In 2011 they also implemented a carnival system and integrated reporting for all the prep students. The club has also formed successful partnerships securing sponsorship from local and International businesses.
Club Promotion Commendation (5) There are five clubs that have received commendations in this category:
1.Tumbletastics – In 2011 TumbleTastics appeared on Channel 7’s “ The Great South East “, the segment was for 5 minutes in duration and featured their unique baby sensory program and Kindergym program. The business nearly doubled its’ numbers within the following month, finishing 2011 with almost 400 participants. This television appearance heightened their aspirations to be known as industry leaders in early childhood development.
2. Brisbane Boys’ College – In September 2011 as a part of the “Southern Skies “program BBC head coach travelled to North Qld to introduce the sport of gymnastics to rural and remote student communities. This is a high profile program involving 8 sports administered with an intense 2 day community sporting clinic. Participants are given the opportunity to try all the sports with potential talent being identified . On the third day academic testing and information sessions were held for interested families. BBC along with Acromat provided all the equipment for use in the clinics, the equipment was donated to the local communities.
3.Allstar Gymnastics - In January 2011 this Toowoomba club sustained extensive damage during the Flood event. With a lack of equipment and resources all staff (coaching and admin) worked tirelessly throughout the year to put forward a positive front and continue to implement initiatives promoting the club to its members and the wider community including: certificate and badge program in the General Gymnastics program, free come & Try classes, website development, regular releases and photos sent to local media, running of local competitions for the juniors, conducted 1st member survey. Despite the obstacles the efforts and outlook of the staff resulted in growth for the club.
4. Gladstone Gymnastic Club – 2011 saw the clubs’ membership grow to a record 557. The club attributes this growth to the extensive PR carried out by the staff and its members. Within the club they have open lines of communication, weekly notices are emailed, staff and members are thanked in many ways- in notices, committee meeting, gifts, monetary bonuses, reduction in fees, free Club T-shirts, introduction of the Gladstone Groovers reward system in the recreational programs. In the wider community club members willingly distribute promotional flyers, club sponsors actively promote the club, Gladstone assists the council in running a program for at risk children called ‘Circus Fruits’. Each term the club distributes letters to primary and secondary school in Gladstone about their school program, this resulted in 4 new schools engaging the clubs services. The club launched a Facebook page, runs regular birthday parties at the club, Invites the local Mayor to all major events, and nominates club members for all awards available. The clubs end of year display held at the local entertainment centre which holds over 600 seats was sold out. This event attracted extensive local media.
5. Delta Gymnastics Brisbane – Experienced the 8th year of consistent growth through member retention and converting enquiry to membership. In 2011 Delta employed a Marketing Officer and developed a plan articulating who members are, what they want, where to find them, and how to keep them. Throughout the year the club initiated online newsletters, online surveys, a facebook page, trialled Google Ad Words , updated website, signage, brochures and membership packs and launched a Delta U Tube Chanel. In November 2011 Delta trialled a new promotion in Living Social, this successfully delivered 120 new members in 7 day period. In 2011 Delta has won several awards, Westpac Small Business of the year in Brisbane North, Qld National Stream Coach of the Year, GA National Coach of the year. Awards are promoted to club members and the wider community. The hosting of 2 major invitationals and intraclub carnivals saw participation by 2100 children. Finally Delta’s 11th Annual Awards dinner attracted 284 members celebrate the year that was
